Dokdo in the East Sea is unequivocally Korean

Establishment

  • August 7, 2008: The Northeast Asian History Foundation holds its third Board of Directors’ meeting of 2008 to vote on reorganization plans and proposed revisions to the Articles of Incorporation related to the establishment of the Dokdo Research Institute.
  • August 11, 2008: The proposed revision to the Articles of Incorporation is authorized by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology.
  • August 14, 2008: The Dokdo Research Institute is inaugurated.

Purpose

  • Develop a long-term, comprehensive, and systematic approach to the  Dokdo issue
  • Undertake research on Dokdo-related strategies and policies, develop counterarguments, and make government policy recommendations

History

  • Expansion and reorganization of Research Department III
    • - Research Department III, in charge of issues related to territories and territorial waters, was spun off into a specialized division dedicated to Dokdo issues

Main Functions

  • Formulate Dokdo-related strategies and policies, undertake research and surveys, and shape and spread public opinion
  • Serve as the hub of Dokdo research

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Promote comprehensive and systematic research on Dokdo
    • - Oversee and coordinate research conducted by Dokdo-related research institutions in Korea
    • - Through a process of selection and focus, devise a new, coherent paradigm supporting Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo
    • - Train and utilize Dokdo specialists
  • Reinforce international consensus on the persuasiveness of the reasoning underlying Korea’s claim over Dokdo
    • - Build upon Korea’s rightful claim over Dokdo and develop it into an organized corpus of logically reasoned arguments with international appeal
    • - Regularly hold international symposiums on Dokdo in major cities in around the world
  • Create and foster favorable international public opinion
    • - Promote campaign aimed at the fostering the correct understanding of Dokdo
  • Strengthen and expand Dokdo education
  • Build a network of related organizations, e.g. research institutions and civic groups
  • Support activities to rectify incorrect naming of Dokdo and promote the use of its correct name
    • - Collaborate with Vank, a nongovernmental diplomatic society
    • - Build a system of close collaboration with embassies and legations overseas
