Composition & Size

Dokdo in the East Sea is unequivocally Korean

1) Composition
Dokdo consists of two main islands, Dongdo and Seodo, and 89 tiny rocks and reefs. The shortest distance between the two main islands is 151 meters at low tide.

2) Area
Dokdo’s total surface area is 187,554 square meters. Dongdo is 73,297 square meters and Seodo is 88,740 square meters. The rest of the islands combined have a surface area of 25,517 square meters.

3) Elevation
The peak of the cone-shaped island of Seodo is 168.5 meters above sea level, and the highest point on Dongdo is 98.6 meters above sea level.

4) Coastline
Dokdo has a total coastline of 5.4 kilometers (Dongdo 2.8 km, Seodo 2.6 km). Dongdo has a port.

5) Geography
Seodo (West Island) and Dongdo (East Island) are 110-160 m (360-554 ft) apart. The narrow inlet between the two is only 330 m (0.2 mi) long. Dongdo has a crater and consists largely of andesite. Seodo is mostly ignimbrite and its highest point is 169 m (554 ft) above sea level. Dongdo was once called “Female Island,” and Seodo, “Male Island.”
